Sacramatic
Order of Christian Initiation of Adults

Becoming Catholic, step by step.

OCIA is the Catholic Church's process for welcoming adults into full communion — through inquiry, formation, the sacraments, and a lifetime of discipleship.

What is OCIA?

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (formerly RCIA) is the Catholic Church's official process for adults who wish to be baptized, received into full communion, or complete the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist).

It is not a class to "pass" — it is a journey of conversion, prayer, study of Scripture and Tradition, and gradual integration into the life of a parish community. The pace is personal; most candidates walk the path over the course of a year, culminating at the Easter Vigil.

The four stages

OCIA unfolds in distinct stages, each marked by a liturgical rite that publicly recognizes the candidate's progress.

Stage 1

Inquiry (Precatechumenate)

An open, no-pressure period of asking questions, hearing the Gospel, and discerning whether to continue. No commitment required.

Stage 2

Catechumenate

Formal formation in Scripture, doctrine, prayer, and the moral life. Marked by the Rite of Acceptance / Rite of Welcoming.

Stage 3

Purification & Enlightenment

The season of Lent — focused on interior conversion, the Scrutinies, and final preparation for the sacraments.

Stage 4

Mystagogy

The Easter season and beyond — newly initiated Catholics deepen their participation in the sacraments and parish life.

Common questions

Who is OCIA for?

Adults (and children of catechetical age) who are unbaptized, baptized in another Christian tradition seeking full communion with the Catholic Church, or baptized Catholics who never received Confirmation or First Eucharist.

How long does it take?

Typically about a year, beginning in early fall and ending at the Easter Vigil. The actual pace is set in consultation with your pastor and OCIA director — there is no fixed deadline.

Do I have to commit to becoming Catholic to attend?

No. The Inquiry stage is explicitly open. You may explore, ask questions, and step away at any time without obligation.
